THE VIRGINS and Some Great Company

It had to happen sometime. the Chicago Sun-Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer published a list of recommended summer book reads—that was full of books that don’t exist. The writer in charge of putting together the list had relied on AI to do the choosing, and AI was having one of its, you know, hallucinatory episodes.

Rebecca Makkai (author of the very real and powerful novels The Borrower, The Great Believers, and I Have Some Questions For You, among other works) was ensnared by this nonsense (she has in fact not written a novel called Boiling Point, nor has Percival Everett written The Rainmakers), and her response was this list of real recommendations for your summer, which I am very happy to find myself on, along with many writers I too urge you to read: Julie Otsuka! Dinaw Mengestu! Charlotte Brontë!
